——Global LED output is expected to grow by this amount in 2021
According to the Optoelectronics Research Office of TrendForce, the LED industry will be hit by COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, and the market demand will drop significantly. The estimated output value will only reach 15.127 billion US dollars, a 10% annual decrease and a rare recession in past years.Looking ahead to 2021, global LED output is expected to reach $15.7 billion next year, up 3.8 percent year on year, as long-pent-up demand for vaccines hits a bottom.
TrendForce pointed out that due to the diversity of LED applications, the recovery of the industry varies among application categories. From the perspective of traditional backlight applications, telecommuting and teaching derived from the epidemic will become a normal part of life in 2020, driving the demand for consumer electronic products such as tablets and laptops.LED backlighting companies are doing well thanks to strong panel demand, but with concerns that most consumers will buy ahead of time this year, TrendForce-based Consulting is reserved on whether 2021 will see a continuation of the strong demand in 2020.
As for the Mini LED backlight, it is expected that under the leadership of big manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung, new products will be released continuously in 2021, which will drive the demand for Mini LED backlight to grow significantly. The output value of Mini LED backlight is likely to reach 131 million US dollars in 2021, an increase of nine times compared with 2020.
From the perspective of display applications, LED displays are mainly used in commercial space. Similar to general lighting, due to the decrease in commercial performances, the output value of LED displays will decline by 9.3% in 2020.Looking forward to 2021, the output value of LED displays is expected to return to the pre-epidemic level of about us $1.48 billion due to the gradual recovery of various commercial shows and the rising demand for small-space LED displays with higher resolution.
From the perspective of general lighting, the application of LED lighting has declined significantly due to the impact of the epidemic. As a result of the decrease in the number of commercial activities, the demand for commercial lighting and outdoor landscape lighting has declined, which is the most obvious. The demand for plant lighting has increased significantly. In addition, the impact of the epidemic on the food supply chain is gradually emerging, and the investment in indoor farming is heating up again. It is expected that some lighting applications will start to bottom out in 2021.In terms of automotive lighting, the global sales decline in 2020 will also cause a sharp freeze in the automotive lighting market. It is expected that the output value of automotive LED lighting will return to the level of 2.6 billion US dollars in 2021 as the epidemic slows down.
