A-The industry first developed Micro LED using 12-inch silicon wafers

Industry first! The company successfully developed Micro LED using 12-inch silicon wafers.

Aledia, a French developer of 3D GaN LED technology, announced yesterday(12.15) that it had successfully grown the industry's first Nanowire Micro LED chip on a 12-inch (300mm) silicon wafer.

Aledia was spun off from France's Micro and CEA-Leti Laboratories, a leading nanotechnology research institute, in 2012, and the breakthrough on the 12-inch wafer was the result of a collaboration between the two teams.

Aledia has been developing its breakthrough technology on 8-inch (200mm) silicon wafers for the past eight years.Today, there are also technological breakthroughs on 12-inch silicon wafers, which means Aledia will grow chips on 8-inch and 12-inch silicon wafers in the future, offering different solutions.

Larger wafers are known to bring better economic returns and can be more cost-effective to integrate with electronics with smaller nodes.Only 12-inch silicon wafers are currently available.

Aledia's CEO and co-founder Giorgio Anania said Aledia was the first company in the world to produce Micro LED on 12-inch silicon wafers, opening up its potential for mass production.

According to The company, 60-100 smartphone screens can be produced on a 12-inch silicon wafer. To produce with the current LED industry standard 4-inch sapphire substrate, approximately 4-6 sheets are required.

Aledia said the production of 60-100 smartphone screens on a 12-inch wafer based on proprietary nanowires LED(3D LED) technology and silicon wafers 780 meters thick could be achieved through commercial processes and equipment.

Conventional 2D Micro LED are produced by depositinggan crystal flat layers on 4-6 inch (100-150nm) sapphire wafers. Currently, 4-inch wafers are widely used in the industry.

Aledia's Micro LED technology, by contrast, grows GaN nanowires (GaN crystals of sub-micron diameter) on a larger area of silicon wafers without any of the stress problems that occur on 2D chips. The stress increases with the size of the wafer, so oversized wafers come in handy.

In addition, the use of silicon-based technology can also be used to produce Micro LED in traditional microelectronics factories (silicon wafer foundries), which helps realize mass production and achieve extremely high yield.

Aledia believes large silicon wafers and microelectronics factories are the only way to meet strong end-user demand right now.For example, if a large screen TV of 60 inches or more switches to silicon nanotechnology for better image quality and lower production costs. That would require 24 million 12-inch silicon wafers a year, something that only the silicon industry and its supply chain can do.

Cea-leti LABS says 3D nanowires Micro LED have the potential to penetrate the large-size display market.Cea-leti is actively supporting and promoting the display industry's transition to Micro LED technology.

Since the beginning of this year,Aledia has continued to strengthen the research and development of Micro LED technology, with frequent big moves.

On the one hand,Aledia has completed an 80 million euro investment and plans to build a 140 million euro LED production plant in France. The company expects to start producing leds at the new plant by 2022 and will also complete the production process for its microdisplays.Micro LED microdisplays will begin to be provided.

On the other hand,Aledia purchased Veeco's thin-film processing equipment in order to accelerate the development and production of 3D Micro LED in terms of investment in key equipment.

Aledia's Micro LED technology has made substantial progress based on the cooperation between important manufacturers in the industry chain.Business scale is also expanding at the same time. In the future, it will also be an important force to promote the commercialization of Micro LED.
